Ethics in Forensic Practice Workshop

The State Forensic Service is offering a three-hour workshop, presented by Peter Donnelly, Ph.D., on the topic of Ethics in Forensic Practice, March 9 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. The cost is $25, payable by check at the door. Anyone wishing to reserve a spot should e-mail me (Ann.Leblanc@maine.gov). I will be sending out a formal brochure, with learning objectives and so forth, but at this point weve had so many queries about when and if were going to do this, Im just sending out a save the date. I know that there may be psychologists looking for last-minute training, and this is now open to any psychologist, and it is inexpensive as well. Were without a secretary at the moment, so Im keeping everything rather bare bonesno snacks, no registration form, no pay in advance. Ann LeBlanc

Social Phobia CBT Groups Recruiting Again NOW
Next 8-Session Cycles to Start in January

-----------------------------------------------------------------

We know that it is not easy to convince those who suffer with generalized social phobia (GSP) to try group therapy. But we're hoping that by now you've heard enough good things about our CBT groups for GSP to encourage your patients/clients with GSP to give us a call and give us a chance. Maybe it would help if they heard from you about the enthusiastic comments you've heard from our graduates about our program or how far members have been willing to travel (e.g., Cape Elizabeth, Waterville, Brunswick, Fryeburg) week after week to get what our groups offer. If you haven't heard of our groups or want to know more about them, please feel free to send me an e-mail (gpstreet@anxietysolutions.net) or give me a call (207-655-2737).

Right now, we're trying to get the word out not only to adults but also teens and pre-teens (and/or their parents) that NOW IS THE TIME to get in contact with us because the next cycles of our groups are scheduled to begin in January. And since they're closed groups, members are only admitted between cycles, which can mean a 3-month wait or longer. All too often we've gotten inquiries a week or two after a group cycle has just started.

These groups are intended to be adjuncts to (not replacement of) individual therapy, so we're willing to coordinate with you or work new members into our individual therapy schedules, as needed. The program provides social skills training (ranging from eye contact and chatting to assertiveness or public speaking, as needed) as well as both cognitive restructuring and exposure therapy, all in an environment in which every member starts out nervous about how everyone else is judging them and every member not only challenges him- or herself but also supports other members in their own challenges.

Thanks in advance for your help, referrals, support, etc.

Bold Moves: Enhancing Your Practice with Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
A full-day workshop with Joel Guarna, PhD

Date: Friday, Feb 24, 2012
Location: Portland, Maine
Organized by the Health Education Training Institute (HETI). Click for more information or to register.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is both a contemporary form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and a mindfulness-based psychotherapy. ACT has shown much promise in helping clients with a wide range of emotional and behavioral difficulties and, more generally, to help people move toward living well. ACT introduces a comprehensive model of therapy, including a creative set of metaphors and experiential exercises to help clients (a) move away from unworkable change strategies, (b) make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, and other private reactions they have learned to avoid, (c) re-connect with their deepest values to set a direction for change and to motivate change, and (d) experience their struggles differently and in a manner that permits them to move forward with their lives now.

Using a combination of didactic presentation and experiential exercises, this workshop will introduce participants to the ACT model. Attendees will leave this training with a basic understanding of ACT approaches to therapy and with specific skills they can employ immediately.
