Application for Membership

Instructions to Applicants
  1. Read the application carefully to determine the appropriate membership category.
  2. Complete all relevant information on the application.
  3. All applications will be reviewed for approval by the Policy Council.
  4. A current curriculum vitae (CV) is needed in order for your application to be complete. There will be an opportunity, later in the registration process for you to send us your CV online. Your CV should be a Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF document. (If you need assistance in attaching documents, please contact MePA Administration.)

Eligibility. Individuals are eligible who are interested in the advancement of psychology as a science and as a profession and who meet the standards described below:

Membership Categories

Member.  Those designated as member of the Maine Psychological Association must meet the following requirements:
  1. Have principal residence or employment in Maine; and
    2a. Are Fellows or Members of the American Psychological Association; or
    2b. Possess qualifications equivalent to those required of Fellows or Members of the APA as follows:
    1. Hold a doctorate based in part upon a psychological dissertation which is conferred by a graduate school of recognized standing, or
    2. Hold a doctorate from a program primarily psychological in content which is conferred by a graduate school of recognized standing; and
  1. Are currently engaged in study or professional work that is primarily psychological in nature.

      Members are entitled to the rights and privileges of the Association without restriction.

Associate.  Those designated as Associates of MePA must meet the following requirements:
  1. Have principal residence or employment in Maine; and
  2. Have completed at least two years of graduate work in psychology in a recognized graduate school plus a year of of acceptable experience in professional work that is psychological in nature and are currently engaged in professional or graduate work that is primarily psychological in nature.

Associates participate fully in all Association business and may have voting privileges after five (5) consecutive years in the status of Associate membership, but they may not hold an elective office in the Association.

Affiliates.  Those who do not possess all the necessary qualifications to be Associates or Members but who support the goals of the Association.
  1. A member who no longer meets the residency or employment requirements for Fellow, Member or Associate.
  2. A person who possess a bachelors degree in a behavioral science program from an accredited college or university and is employed in work which is primarily psychological in nature. (One year of such work under appropriate supervision may be substituted for the college major).
  3. A psychologist who resides in a country other than the U.S.
  4. A graduate or undergraduate student in a psychology program at an accredited college or university.
  5. A person teaching one or more psychology courses in a recognized high school within Maine.

      Affiliates may not represent themselves as Fellows, Members or Associates of the Association.

Academician/Researcher. Psychologists who are employed in a full-time faculty or research position and who do not engage in private practice.

Retired. Members or academicians who are retired.


Membership Dues
     Dues are payable for the fiscal year beginning January 1 and ending December 31. Payment for the first year of dues should accompany the application. There is a 50 percent reduction in dues for the first year of membership and a 30 percent reduction for the second. New members joining after July 1 will receive an additional 50 percent reduction (that is, dues will 25% of the total) in year 1, and a 50 percent reduction in the following full year. In their second full year of membership, new members will receive a 30 percent reduction in dues.

2008 Dues
     $265 Members with Income > $30,000 (50% discount for first-year members: $132.50)
     $225 Members with Income < $30,000 (50% discount for first-year members: $112.50)
     $90 Academician/Researcher
     $75 Associate
     $65 Retired
     $40 Affiliate


Change of Residence or Employment
     A Member, Associate or Affiliate who removes his or her principal residence and/or his or her principal employment from Maine may be continued in the same status for one year following the close of the fiscal year provided the other conditions of membership are complied with, including payment of dues. Members and Associates may transfer to Affiliate status upon payment of Affiliate dues. Otherwise, membership will be terminated at the close of the fiscal year.


Resignation
     A Member, Associate or Affiliate may resign at any time by notifying the Secretary/Treasurer of the Association.


Termination of Membership
     A Fellow, Member, Associate or Affiliate may be dropped or suspended from membership for just cause by a three-fourths (3/4) vote of the Policy Council after notification in writing of the charges against him or her and the opportunity for a hearing before the Policy Council. Membership may be terminated after one year for nonpayment of dues.
